Traditional Weight Loss
In traditional weight loss programs, when a person engages in restricted, low calorie eating, a few things begin to happen. The brain senses that you are starving it. Therefore, its job of ensuring your survival kicks in. When your brain senses this beginning to happen, it seeks to hang on to stored nutrition as much as possible in order to keep you going for as long as possible.
The fat that most of us would like to get rid of is the visceral fat, the stubborn fat that is tucked in around your organs.
Visceral fat is also referred to as famine fat, and your brain is going to hold onto that as long as possible. As you severely restrict calorie intake, your brain saves the famine fat for the Big Famine. Therefore, instead of accessing the stored nutrition in your visceral fat cells, it instructs your body to begin consuming other fat sources, like your structural fat which is the padding at strategic places in your body, like the ends of your fingers, or the padding under your feet.
The brain will also target the dermal fat which is the fat just under the surface of the skin. The brain might then tell the body to begin consuming some muscle tissue before it is willing to begin giving up the visceral fat. By the time the brain will begin releasing the stored nutrition in your visceral fat, the bottoms of your feet hurt and your newly-wrinkled face looks ten years older. And you are hungry!
